How do you know what youre make of? Does one break himself when he is confronted by tragedy? When faced with an enemy or a jockeyr, perhaps? Sometimes, it takes a drastic change in surroundings to clear the head and refocus the mind. In the baptistery of the main characters in my story selections, both of them have to study away from themselves to find themselves, so to speak. They were both in research for some topic new and fresh to bring home and parade around. Because of this intent search, they found themselves faced with something (or someone) bewilderingly different from their preconceived notions. These discoveries made by the main characters attempt to teach them a thing or two about humanity and compassion. But how heart-to-heart are first-world citizens to the musings of lowly tribes people? Apparently, theyre not that blossom out at all.
The stories I have selected are entitled The Smallest cleaning womanhood in The World by Clarice Lispector and The Music Child by Alfred Yuson. In Smallest Woman... the reader finds himself tagging along to the adventure of Marcel Pretre, a French explorer in the depths of the Central Congo in Africa. In his quest, he stumbled across a woman who was a mere forty-five centimetres in height. This discovery amazed him so much that he proceeded in naming the miniscule woman inadequate tiptop.
He then sent pictures of Little Flower to the Sunday newspaper back in France. The story lucubrate on the reactions of the French people to this startling image of Little Flower who was indeed, so little. The reactions range from mild dismissal to merciless discrimination. Towards the end of the story, the author narrates from Little Flowers delegate of view. We find out how open she is to the yellow explorer who was scrutinizing her. She did not make any judgements. As far as she was concerned, she was bonnie happy that this large man wasnt eating her.
