Merck and Companys history dates as far back as 1668 in Darmstadt, Germany when Friedrich Jacob Merck purchases an apothecary. In 1827, Heinrich Emmanuel Merck transforms the pharmaceutics into a drug manufacturing facility. Later, in 1887, the German company, E. Merck AG, sets up a sales office in the United States. Then in 1891, George Merck, grandson of Heinrich Merck, joins the U.S. branch, known as Merck and Company.
